Nassau resident takes in almost 100 stray dogs during hurricane Dorian

With Hurricane Dorian laying waste the Bahamas, almost 100 dogs have been given food, safety, and shelter thanks to one compassionate woman. — reported the Good News Network on 3 Sep, 2019.

Chella Phillips has taken 97 homeless and abandoned dogs into her Nassau home since the storm hit the island this week. In a series of Facebook posts, Phillips says that 79 of these dogs are staying in the massive master bedroom of her home—but as long as the animals are kept safe from the elements, she doesn’t mind sharing her living space.

Phillips launched a crowdfunding campaign to help finance her animal refuge, it has raised $200,000—which is more than ten times her original goal.

Over the course of the last 15 years Chella has helped more than 1,000 homeless dogs on the islands

“It has been insane since last night, pooping and peeing non-stop, but at least they are respecting my bed and nobody has dared to jump in,” shared Phillips on Facebook.

Though the island was subjected to flooding and Phillips has been working around the clock to keep the house dry, she says the dogs are safe.

Additionally, Phillips launched a crowdfunding campaign to help finance her animal refuge, so far it has raised $200,000—which is more than ten times her original goal.

This is not the first time that Phillips has shown compassion towards Bahamian canines. Over the course of the last 15 years, she has helped more than 1,000 homeless dogs on the islands and found homes for 200 dogs in the United States.

She now hopes that—as her story is shared across news outlets and social media—her posts will help get the rescued dogs into loving forever homes.

Chella wrote on the crowdfunding page. “Each and every one should get their personal time to savor the feeling of being cherished. They all want nothing more than to love, and be loved; to feel safe and secure, with their basic needs met.”

The Voiceless Dogs of Pawtcake Refuge Crowdfunding Campaign

Phillips launched a crowdfunding campaign to help finance her animal refuge. The latest update reads:

“I don’t even know what to say, how to thank you, your love, words, donations are keeping me alive, giving me hope and I want you to know, that no matter how much is raised, every nickel will go to saving dogs lives, there is soooooo much to do now, there will be so many more dogs that your donations will allow me to save, please know that your money will be spent saving lives, buying food, getting their medical expenses paid, buying them toys so they can know happiness for once in their lives, finding them great, safe, peaceful forever homes…. My heart is full, and I want everyone that has reached out to know that.”

A lot of people have asked what they can do moving forward to help. Honestly, the best way to help us, is to consider a recurring donation on paypal or our website and follow our daily rescues and success stories and struggles on our Facebook page. If we could get 1,000 people to each donate $10 a month or 500 people $20 a month, it would give us the peace of mind to know we could spend all our energy on saving lives instead of stressing about our very survival.

My biggest dream is to be able to buy a land to move all my dogs far from the city and to help bring even more that are outside on the streets or hiding in the bushes terrified of people without a chance to make it on their own. Thank you does not even cover the gratitude in my heart right now.

Our direct paypal is: pawtcake.refuge.inc@gmail.com or you can use the August FundRazr until September FundRazr gets updated.”

So far the campaign has raised over $200,000—which is more than ten times Phillips’ original goal. Scroll down for a gallery of some of Chella’s impromptu house guests.
