The world’s very first plastic-free pop-up store has made its debut in Amsterdam

If you thought you couldn’t do without plastic food and beverage packaging, think again! You’ll find almost 700 plastic-free organic products in their own special section of the store.

Step into a plastic-free world where even the stuff that looks like plastic… isn’t!

Dutch organic supermarket chain, Ekoplaza, stands for organic. They say they want to support their customers in a healthy, organic lifestyle. The company believe that the grass roots is the foundation of everything: when we treat the soil well, healthy, tasty products are produced — full of nutrients and rich in flavour. A range of almost 700 products can be found in their stores, free from artificial colours and flavours or preservatives. Food as it is intended, and sold in a rather special environmentally friendly packaging.

A milestone in the worldwide battle against plastic pollution

To Ekoplaza, organic food isn’t just carefully grown and prepared. The company say their core values are also about health and environmental accountability, and as part of their strongly held corporate philosophy they decided to abandon products that are packaged in one or more layers of plastic.

They became fed up with it, and so did their customers, so they found an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic packaging, in the form of innovative compostable biomaterials made from a sugarcane base rather than petroleum. Most products in this store are made from this special bio material. It’s material that’s fully compostable in twelve weeks.

Customers can recognise it by the seedling logo on the packaging which guarantees it is certified and compostable. You can put this with your kitchen and garden waste, and in twelve weeks it will be fully composted.

Ekoplaza LAB was created in cooperation with the British environmental action group A Plastic Planet, in the hope that other supermarkets in the Netherlands and the UK will soon follow in their footsteps.

Sian Sutherland, the group’s co-founder, says: "The introduction of the world’s first plastic-free pop-up store is a milestone in the worldwide battle against plastic pollution."

Plastic packaging is used for a few days, but has a devastating impact on our planet for centuries. Ekoplaza LAB are just beginning their plastic-free movement. They say they are working towards a plastic-free aisle in every Ekoplaza nationwide, and are collaborating with stores further afield.

A source of good: Bluewater compact water purifiers remove virtually all pollutants

The world currently uses more than one million plastic bottles every minute, mostly for drinking water. Fewer than 9% of these get recycled. The Swedish company Bluewater cuts out plastic bottles by supplying technology that purifies drinking water on the spot.

Stockholm-based Bluewater is a world leading water purification company that innovates, manufactures and commercialises compact water purifiers that harness the company’s patented reverse osmosis technology to remove virtually all pollutants from tap water, including lead, bacteria, pesticides, medical residues, chlorine and lime-scale.

They have the system installed at Ekoplaza LAB and, believe it or not, the water comes straight out of the canal! It’s cleaner, it’s healthier, and it’s helping to create a sustainable future without plastic bottles in our oceans. So it’s good for you, humanity, and the planet. Take your own bottle, and try it for yourself!
