Indian startup Aloe E-Cell has created world’s first 100% eco-friendly and non-hazardous 1.5V AA and AAA size batteries using aloe vera to replace the toxic cocktail found in standard dry cell batteries.

Eco friendly and non hazardous batteries using Aloe Vera – 100 % Made In India

Rajasthan-based startup Aloe Ecell has developed the world’s first 100% eco-friendly and non-hazardous 1.5V AA and AAA size batteries using aloe vera. The technology converts chemical energy inside the aloe vera plant into electrical energy. The startup has replaced the toxic and hazardous chemicals of standard batteries with the herbal electrolyte. These batteries do not cause soil, water or air pollution as no hazardous metals such as lead and mercury are used.

In addition they are non-explosive, as electrolytes such Potassium Hydroxide are not present. The e-cells production costs are 10% less and the startup claim their batteries last 50% longer than regular dry cell equivalents. The batteries provide clean, green energy and can be disposed of easily without burdening landfills and causing pollution or fire hazards. This not only helps the environment but has the potential to provide many farmers with a regular income.

Aloe Ecell, have developed the world's first 100% Eco-friendly and Non-hazardous 1.5V AA sized batteries using ALOE VERA which can be used a replacement for the existing hazardous dry cell batteries of remote controls. clocks, toys, etc at 10% cheaper cost and 1.5X more durability.

The green e-cellis eco-friendly, non-toxic and non-explosive

Aloe vera is widely acknowledged as natural moisturiser amd herbal panacea for disease, but now it seems the soothing cactus-like plant can also generate electricity and power batteries.

Replacing toxic metals such as lead and mercury in a dry cell battery, a young woman from Lucknow and a young man from Rajasthan have used aloe vera extracts and other herbal products to form a ‘green e-cell’ that’s both eco-friendly and non-hazardous.

The innovation won accolades and will be part of the top eight start-ups from across the world at the Innovation Summit 2021 beginning Tuesday 29 June in Barcelona.

Engineering graduates Nimisha Varma of Lucknow and Naveen Suman of Bundi, Rajasthan, took aloe extracts and added a few herbal constituents used in beauty products and medicines, to make a battery electrolyte.

"It’s time to go green. Aloe vera is known to heal, but we found a method of generating electrical energy from chemical energy of aloe vera and few other herbal components," Nimisha told TOI from Spain.

How did they come up with the idea? "We wanted to do something on managing waste. During research, we found that batteries used in everyday life are hazardous. They are one of biggest e-waste, and primary causes of disease. It was then that we found a green energy solution by developing aloe batteries," Nimisha said.

The green idea has earlier been chosen by the US Embassy for incubation. According to Nimisha, aloe batteries are non-explosive in nature and can be used in clocks, toys and remotes. These batteries can power low-drain, medium-drain and high-drain devices. The technology is yet to be patented, but the makers say an average cost of these batteries will be around Rs 9-10 (€0.11/$0.13) per unit in India.

Some of the advantages of the ECell:

  • The aloe vera batteries would be 100% natural and eco friendly battery cells.
  • These batteries would be the first in the world to be completely non hazardous.
  • The batteries would run 50% more than the normal mercury lead made batteries.
  • The cost would be 10% less than those of the normal batteries.
  • The concept is completely made in India therefore it would be a boost for the Indian economy too.
  • Last but not the least this startup would give many farmers and other people jobs for survival.
The batteries are yet to be patented and mass produced, but the idea is brilliant and gaining traction among backers.

Batteries are usually discarded when only 70-80% of their energy is used, meaning 20-30% of its potential charge still remains. This increases the chances of explosion when they end up in the landfills, because when dumped in large numbers they can form a complete circuit, which in turn can trigger explosions or serious fires.
97% of the materials used in regular batteries are imported to India from different countries like the USA and China — this levies a high burden of US$149B on the Indian Economy.
