When suddenly asked a deep question by The Late Show host Stephen Colbert, the actor’s thoughtful response was even deeper still.
‘What happens when we die?’ — Reeves’ reply stunned Colbert into silence
While mortality isn’t the most common topic of conversation during celebrity appearances on late night chat shows, the serious subject matter arose when Reeves, 54, was discussing the third installment of the Bill and Ted franchise during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last week. Colbert then went on to ask the actor what he thought happens when we die. Reeves’ profound response drew a big “Ahhh” from the crowd and left Colbert speechless for several seconds before he reached over to shake the actor’s hand.
Reeves was no doubt speaking from experience, having endured multiple tragedies in his life
Keanu Reeves’ best friend, River Phoenix, died of a drug overdose in 1993 at the age of 23. His late girlfriend Jennifer Syme, whom he met in 1998, later gave birth to their stillborn baby daughter. Reeves and Syme remained best friends until April 2001, when Syme died in a car crash.
After years of speculation about whether a third film in the cult comedy franchise would ever come back, in March, Reeves and Alex Winter, who starred in in 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and its 1991 sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey — confirmed they would be returning for another movie.
The long-awaited film will be written by franchise scribes Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon and will go into production this summer, with a release date scheduled for Aug. 21, 2020, according to the The New York Times.
John Wick: Chapter 3 opens in US theaters on May 17, 2019.
