Pamela Baye makes handmade hats at no cost for children with CHD in honour of her daughter who passed away from complications of her heart transplant.
Heart-warming (and tiny head-warming) story of how a mother turned grief into something positive
When Pamela Baye’s daughter, Alyssa, passed away due to complications related to her heart transplant, a huge hole was left in Pamela’s life. To help fill that hole she and her partner and best friend, Chantel Austin, started crocheting hats for other children with congenital heart conditions.
“Hooked up to so many tubes and wires they can’t wear clothes: but they can wear hats!”
On Alyssa’s Handmades Facebook Homepage, Pamela describes in her own words the inspiration behind the idea:
My name is Pamela. My daughter Alyssa passed away from complications of a heart transplant. Please read more about this page and about my daughter below
This page has been created to honor my daughter, and help fill the huge hole she left in my heart when she died. Her hand prints above, on the cover picture helped me come up with the name "Alyssa’s Handmades"
Alyssa’s Handmades was created so we could send handmade hats to babies and children with heart defects of any kind. Please understand….these hats are totally FREE and no cost to the families of these Heart Warriors. We run on donations. The rest comes from our hearts
When she was 12 years old she was diagnosed with Restrictive cardiomyopathy. (RCM) is a rare form of heart muscle disease that is characterized by restrictive filling of the ventricles. In this disease the contractile function (squeeze) of the heart and wall thicknesses are usually normal, but the relaxation or filling phase of the heart is very abnormal.
She received her gift of a heart on May 14th, 2001. That beautiful gift gave her life for nearly 10 more years until she passed away on March 25th, 2011, at the young age of 22.
Alyssa was beautiful both inside and out. She was inspiring, and influential to so many who loved her and have been guided by her wisdom. She wanted to do so much to make this world a better place. I hope she knows that she did.
Approximately 40,000 babies are born each year in the United States with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD).
Many of these babies spend days, months, and sometimes years in the hospital hooked up to so many tubes and wires they can’t wear clothes. But they can wear hats. They can wear cute hats.
If your child has a heart condition and you would like us to make him/her a hat, just leave us a message. We need his/her name, first and last, address, age, and some of their interests.
We do not accept "orders" for a certain hat. We make these hats from donated yarn and we try our best to make the perfect hat for your heart warrior. We encourage you for example, to tell us they like baseball, Elmo, Batman, or Rainbows. Part of the fun for us is to leave a little mystery/excitement for your heart warrior.
Also please note we are NOT professional crochet hat makers. If you look close you might see mistakes. We are trying to get sizing correct, a difficult thing to do when you have no babies around to try on our hats. But we will get there.
