British band Coldplay has invested in the Dutch initiative The Ocean Cleanup by paying for the latest Interceptor — a floating installation The Ocean Cleanup uses to remove plastic from rivers before it reaches the sea.

another significant step in tackling the world’s 1000 most polluting rivers

The Ocean Cleanup, the Dutch non-profit developing advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic, announced its collaboration with musicians and philanthropists Coldplay. The band will directly support the non-profit’s mission by sponsoring an Interceptor™, The Ocean Cleanup’s solution to extract plastic from rivers before entering the ocean. This collaboration helps to take another significant step in tackling the world’s 1000 most polluting rivers.

“I’ve long admired the work of Coldplay. They are doing great things to promote a better environment, and they are world-renowned for these efforts (as well as their music), and the reach of their voice is immense. So, when we began exploring how to work together, the potential of the partnership was exciting. Now that we have found the right collaboration path and can share it with our supporters, I’m looking forward to what we can achieve,” said Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup.

“If we don’t take action, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050,” Coldplay said in a statement. “That is why the work of The Ocean Cleanup is so important and we are proud that we can sponsor the Neon Moon I.” Source: Facebook/Coldplay

Coldplay Joins The Ocean Cleanup’s Mission to Rid the World’s Oceans of Plastic

UK band Coldplay are well renowned for their their philanthropic endeavours as well as their music, so it was with some excitement that The Ocean Cleanup announced today that the band have chosen to take part in their mission to rid the oceans of plastic through the sponsorship of an Interceptor.

Interceptor 005, or Neon Moon 1, will be deployed in Malaysia this year and is the first deployment of the third-generation design. The Ocean Cleanup and Coldplay collaboration helps to take another significant step in tackling the world’s 1000 most polluting rivers.

Without action, there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050, which is why The Ocean Cleanup’s work is so vital. Interceptor 005 is expected to be deployed within Malaysia this summer

Since 2019, The Ocean Cleanup has announced Interceptor solutions for heavily polluting waterways in countries around the world, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, the United States, Jamaica, and Thailand. As we prepare for scaling up to 1000 rivers, these initial deployments are laying the groundwork for us to fine-tune our business model and technology.

Once they have achieved several successful deployments in rivers, they say they will have the confidence to accelerate Interceptor installments into more countries and even more rivers over the coming years.

Neon Moon 1 is currently under construction at Konecranes’ MHE-Demag facility in Malaysia. This is one of the first two Interceptors produced for series production and the first of the third-generation design.

Interceptor 005 is expected to be completed in late Spring of 2021 and soon after deployed within Malaysia; thanks to the established partnerships in the region, The Ocean Cleanup can commence operations as soon as possible. Working together with local partners, The Ocean Cleanup will ensure Interceptor 005 is installed in an optimal location for removing large amounts of waste from rivers.

WHAT’S NEXT for the ocean cleanup?

An update on the organisation’s website states: As The Ocean Cleanup begins scaling up to deploy more solutions in rivers worldwide, this partnership exemplifies how philanthropists, individuals, and corporations can take part in solving this global problem. We are a non-profit and rely solely on donors and partnerships like this, so we welcome others to take part in our mission with us (we’re always open to creative collaborations).

‘In the coming months, we will continue to update our followers on the status of Interceptor 005, its deployment, and invite all to continue following the story as it unfolds.’
