China claims new 600 km/h(373 mph) maglev train is now the fastest ground transport service in the world.

China debuts world’s first 600 km/h high-speed maglev transportation system

On July 20, 2021, a new ultra-high-speed maglev transportation system was successfully launched in Qingdao, China. Its makers, CRRC Corporation say as the fastest ground transportation vehicle at present, the 600 km/h (373 mph) high-speed maglev transportation system can further broaden the spectrum of transportation speeds and meet the diversified travel needs of the people.

Liang Jianying, deputy general manager and chief engineer of CRRC Sifang, told Chinese state media that in addition to its speed, the train emits low levels of noise pollution and requires less maintenance than other high-speed trains. Currently, the average high-speed train in China can run at about 350 kph, while planes fly at 800-900 kph. Trains like the one unveiled in Qingdao this week could fill a critical middle space.
High-speed rail is a major priority in China, which aims to connect more of its large cities by train to reduce the time and expense required to travel around the world’s most populous country. Currently, China only has one maglev line in commercial use, connecting Shanghai's Pudong Airport with the Longyang Road station in the city. The 30 km (19 mile) journey takes about seven and a half minutes, with the train hitting speeds of 430 kph (267 mph).
However there’s one thing keeping this train from being ready to greet commuters — a lack of completed maglev track networks. How do you stop these things? According to China’s Global Times, the “whirlpool” brake system on this train is considerably more efficient than previous efforts; this train will only take 10 km (6.2 miles) to pull up, where the current Shanghai maglev takes 16 km (10 miles)! The technology uses electro-magnetic force to levitate the body of the vehicle less than two inches from the rails and propel it forward along the tracks. By riding on a cushion of air, friction is drastically reduced, allowing it to travel faster than traditional trains where wheels and rails are constantly in contact.
