The grannies train with coach Claude Maphosa twice-weekly and many claim that they no longer suffer from the ailments they had before and are stronger than ever.

A team boxing grannies are 60 years and above

Boxing grannies are a group of pensioners based in Cosmo City, Johannesburg who have embarked on living a healthy lifestyle, but with an unorthodox twist: boxing training!

“A-team”, a local non-profit organisation, has given them opportunity and access for free to gym on Tuesday and Thursday, and an award-winning former bodybuilder to train them.

In one of Johannesburg’s poorest suburbs, Claude Maphosa is teaching a group of grandmothers how to box, the result of which is not only the phenomenal health benefits for these 60+yr-old women but a boost in confidence and the opportunity to be social with friends while getting a thorough workout.

The “gogos” train with coach Maphosa in twice-weekly sessions and many claim that they no longer suffer from the ailments they had before and are stronger than ever.

The 82-year-old who attends the gym in Cosmo City, Joburg told Daily Sun: “The programme keeps my body fresh and healthy. I’m free like water. I live alone and I can clean my own house without a problem.”

stay active as you age for better all-round health.

Magogo’s Boxing Fitness (a portmanteau of Maphosa, and “Gogo”, meaning Grandmother in Shona), is a women-only health club that creates a personalised environment for women to pursue their fitness goals.

The idea being to focus on the urban older woman who has a very active life and very little time and money to spend on fitness.

Group members typically rely on grant money to survive in rural development houses.

Such has been the popularity of the sessions, Maphosa is in the process of planning events in other areas for people who have been inspired by the story to join in.

You don’t want to mess around with these grannies. They look like they mean business.

But their message is clear: stay active as you age for better all-round health.

The A Team’s initial purpose is to develop individuals who want to follow an amateur or professional career in sports like bodybuilding and fitness, boxing, aerobics, athletics, volleyball and soccer.

They give motivational talks in townships, such as in Alexandra geared to inspire the youth to stay focused and not give up on their goals regardless of what those goals may be.

The A Team is happy to promote and assist all athletes from all walks of life and Coach Claude is often called to provide his insight and expertise in various sport initiatives and competitions.

Their development initiatives now include Arts & Culture, student after-care and health and fitness for the elderly, mothers, and people with special needs.
